! Copyright FamilyHart 2008 - .Samuel Sherrick, youngest son of John an d Mary (Stalter) Sherrick, was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, Dec. 23, 1 815, died October 7, 1895. In 1833, he married Barbara Stemen, daughte r of Rev. Henry Stemen. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, April 13 th, 1814, died May 6th, 1903. They moved to Marion township, Allen Count y, Ohio in 1841, and settled on a tract of land which they still owned a t the time of their death. I remember of hearing them relate the hardshi ps of pioneer life, and how they had but little besides wild meat to eat , and not enough of that sometimes. I remember of one incident, whic h I will relate. Grandfather had been away from home log-rolling, and o n returning late on Saturday evening, grandmother informed him that her f ather the Rev. Henry Stemen would come there for dinner from church. Sh e was crying as they had no meat and but little of anything else to eat . He heard the sobs of grandmother during the night and slept but little , and early next morning (Sunday) he was out after the cows with his gu n on his shoulder, soon returning with a large turkey and plenty of venis on. "a quilty conscience needeth no accuser." So in this case, grandfath er thinking all the time that father-in-law knew all about it. He did no t receive a reprimand as he anticipated, but only advice not to do so i n the future. His father-in-law claiming it was better to do without mea t than to do wrong. They lived happily together and being industrial an d economical, soon had enough of the land cleared and improved to mak e a good living for their large family. When they first came to Allen Co unty, Ohio, their nearest neighbor was Samuel Stuckey, one mile east, an d nothing but a wilderness between them, and it was from this place tha t they carried all their water for cooking and drinking purposes. For qu ite a long time their only stove was a big stump. But it was not long un til they had a log cabin built, an no doubt this was only one room, but i t served the same purpose as the modern house of today, "it was home" . In those days of the one room house when company came to stay over ni ght, the masculine members would go out and study astronomy while the fem inine members were preparing for bed. For a number of years, their neare st grist mill was at Sidney, Ohio. It usually took a week to make the tr ip there and return, and quite often the only time these pioneers had whi te bread was when there was company. Their every day bill of fare consis ted of wild meat, potatoes and corn bread, and not the "full-o-pep" ratio ns of today. If they had anything on the table to drink besides water i t was tea made from wild herbs or coffee made from parched corn. They k new nothing of the modern "java" of today.
As previously stated, grandfather was one of the pioneers of this count y and endured all the privations and hardships of pioneer life. In his e fforts to improve this farm and support his family, he was nobly aided b y his faithful and devoted wife and children and by hard work and good ma nagement and close attention to business he acquired a big acreage of lan d and still owned a good sized farm at the time of his death. he and hi s good wife were good citizens, universally beloved and honored, kind, te nder and generous, always ready to give of both their time and money, whe n the cause was worthy. They were some of the 18 original members of th e Mennonite Church organized at Salem in 1841 and when in health were alw ays found at their post in the church..
